South Central Regional Affiliate Team Workouts #2 & #3
0 comments Posted by Hardass Fitness at 3:24 PM"You are as happy as you choose to be." - Honest Abe

We had 18 athletes show up for the 9am class. We divided them into four teams of 4 and two teams of 3. Some did one workout and some did both. We blended them with the 10am class where even more athletes showed up. All got what they came for, (an ass-whoopin'=) just kidding...kind of) a challenging and fun workout with the best CrossFit camaraderie.

"Life's too short to wake up in the morning with regrets. So love the people who treat you right and forget about the ones who don't. Believe that everything happens for a reason. If you get a chance, take it. If it changes your life, let it. No one said it would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it."

Some workouts are easy to explain and others are like reading the rules of a board game. But they are always challenging and fun (in a CrossFit sort of way.) The goal is to try and go unbroken during the 25 rep segment - as to not hold the team up - and rest during the 5 rep segment. Happy Birthday Di! This wod is for you.
Workout of the Day:
Teams of 2 complete 30 reps total and then rotate. First partner does 25 reps of one element the second partner does 5 reps of a different element. After rotating, the first partner now gets to do five reps and the second partner completes 25 reps. The partner doing 5 reps gets to rest and cannot rotate until their partner has completed the 25 reps. 1 round has been completed when each partner has done both a 5 rep segment and a 25 rep segment of each of the three elements. Score is max rounds + reps in 20 minutes.

"Age should not have its face lifted, but it should rather teach the world to admire wrinkles as the etchings of experience and the firm line of character." -Clarence Day
Some things are just cool to watch.
Today's workout is considered a "flusher" workout to help prepare everyone for tomorrow's BIG SATURDAY workout titled "Big Kelly with Baggage". A few people wanted to go heavy today so the suggestion was to use dumbbells in the rack position for the squats and lunges. Men's weight-45lb dumbbells, women's weight 25lb dumbbells. This made this fast flurry of a workout devastatingly hard.

50 Squats
40 Lunges
30 Sit-Ups

"I believe that if life gives you lemons, you should make lemonade... And try to find somebody whose life has given them vodka, and have a party." -Ron White

It is time to Party!! We had a hard time trying to decide when to hold our regional games barbecue. Some couldn't make Friday night, some couldn't make Saturday Day, some couldn't make this week and some couldn't make next week. So we decided to do both! Actually we are probably just looking for an excuse to party more! We are having a libation and pupus gathering tomorrow night (Friday) right after the 6:30pm class. In the past, the party normally ends when Powerhouse Gym closes since that is the only available bathrooms. However, since the last barbecue, we found that at midnight, there is a bathroom around every corner or behind any bush. Party will conclude whenever. We will also be having another barbecue next Saturday, May 22, right after the 10am class(grill to light at about 11:30am) Everyone is welcome to come to either, but preferably both.
Pat and Susan(part-time philanthropist) have once again made a generous donation to the room. They have donated the money made by submitting a photo that made the mainsite to pay for the barbecue festivities.

At the Southwest Regional Qualifier, competitors were assigned a heat time for 2 workouts and allowed to chose a time for the "floater wod". Here is the video of Elyse slammin' this wod. Elyse did this workout at noon and held the fastest time. For the rest of the day she had the "time to beat". Every competitor after her was going after Elyse Umeda's time to take her down. They did not succeed.
We programmed this workout for the room so all could feel how challenging this workout is. They got the picture. Elyse is a badass. (Way to represent Hardass) We are all very proud of your accomplishments.
Half the class went on a 800m run and the other half did "Monster Umeda".

Another chance to PR. We did this workout on February 20, 2010. Shuffle good or you end with a whole string of burpees. Yuck!
"Deck of What?"
Spades = Squats
Hearts = Burpees
Clubs = Sit-Ups
Diamonds = Push-Ups
Joker = 400m Run
Ace = 1 rep
Face Cards = 10 reps
Denomination on each card = # of reps required
Flip cards one-at-a-time then do the required reps for that suit. You will do 85 total reps of each movement and 2 - 400m runs.

Is that John B. at the front of the pack? Oh Yeah! Promise to post more pictures as they are sent to me!
Elyse finishes day three in third place. Here are the three individual workouts:
Event #1 On the grass throwing field outside the stadium – Vista Field
- The athlete flips a tire (large truck tires / smaller tires for women) approx. 75m, from behind a start line or cone to beyond a destination line or cone.
- Runs back to the start point.
- Then a log carry (10’ x 8” – approx. 85# - men; 7’ x 7” – approx. 65# women) from behind start cone so the entire log is past the destination cone. if any part of the log hits the ground the athlete must stop completely and re-shoulder the log before continuing.
- Then flip the tire back to start point, passing the start cone.
- Run back to the log and then return it, carrying it until the entire log is past the start cone.
- At all times during the log carry, it must be held above the shoulder.
Elyse came in 10th place for this workout with a time of 5:32. 35 seconds separated 1st and 10th in this workout. What a tight race to be in the top 10.
Event #2 Held on the grass outside the track – Crawford Field
5 Rounds for time:
5 Muscle-ups Men / 2 Women
10 Power Cleans 135# / 85 #
200m Run – around a barrier
Elyse finished second for this workout with a time of 9:21
Floater Workout – On the Basketball Courts. (Announced when the athletes register on Friday 5-7-10)
To be completed on Saturday, based on a time the athlete signs up for at check in:
- The athlete will have 7 minutes to complete a number of repetitions of two movements for the fastest time.
- If an athlete does not complete the event on Saturday he/she will receive a DNF and be disqualified.
Elyse had the top time for this workout with a time of 3:13. For six hours she was the time to beat and no one did. After this workout, if someone didn't know the name Elyse Umeda, they now did.
There were 2 team workouts for Saturday:
Team Competition
Event #1 On the grass outside the track – Crawford Field
A relay involving three stages.
- The first member of the team does a shuttle run to 10 yd, then 20 yd line/cones, then to 100m (If the ground is not touched with one hand completely beyond the line he/she will have to return and touch the ground completely past the cone/line.), to a set of 50# (m) or 30# (w) DB’s at the 100yd line.
- The first member does 30 DB Thrusters then runs back and touches the second athlete who starts the shuttle run to the DB’s.
- The first athlete then does 15 (m) or 10 (w) ring dips, sits down and is finished.
- The team continues with each returning member touching/starting the next member before the leading member does his or her ring dips to finish.
- The clock stops when the last team member finishes his/her dips (the last team member runs straight to the rings from the DB Thrusters, not to the start line).
Our four team members for this workout were Josh, Grant, Cheyne and Sabrina. Timing for this workout could not have been more perfect. Finish time of 13:09. So proud of the Team Hardass. After this workout we held a 12th place position.
Event #2 Held in the track/stadium.
Teams begin on the track in the start positions for a 400m relay race.
- Each team member runs a 100m leg, passing one baton.
- The final leg runner runs his 100m, then runs a full lap, picking up his team members as he goes.
- Once all collected, the team completes another 400m lap from the original start point, together.
- First team finishing the run gets the pick of the work areas along the side of the track in front of the bleachers. Then only two members at a time work, doing the following:
- 250 One Arm DB Power Snatches – any member completes as many as they want with a 50 pound or 30 pound dumbbell. The leading edge of the DB touches the deck each rep, finish position is with the arm locked out overhead and the feet inside of 24” wide lines taped on the deck, each rep.
- 500 Double-Unders. When all reps are complete, the team runs together around the track in the same direction and lane they initially ran in, to a pull up bar complex where, one at a time, they complete a team total of 125 Pull-ups (chin over the bar). Their clock stops when the last pull up rep is done.
Team Hardass for this workout was John, Cheyne, Sabrina and Kimo. John leaded the run the whole way and brought the team into the workout station in 1st place. John, Cheyne, Sabrina took care of the 250 snatches and Kimo did the 500 double-unders. The team finished with a time of 20:15. We are now in 31st place. Sunday awaits us!

Pat sent me an e-mail of his love/hate list. "Love them all, hate them all. The only lift I like is a 12 ounce curl since it gets lighter with every lift." Also Pat is known for being a double-fisted drinker (check his Facebook photos). I thought about doing a dumbbell curl, but that would be so not CrossFit. The dumbbell hang power clean was the closest I could get. For Pat and only Pat, we made it a drinking wod. During the rest period, he had to try and finish two 24 ounce Heinekens. As the picture shows, he did poorly.
